The Southeast Area is composed of seven counties in southeastern Colorado (Baca, Bent, Cheyenne, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero, and Prowers).  The seven counties have a combined population of over 55,000, with Bent having a population of 5688 residents. The 4-H program is made up of 3 clubs with 108 youth members and 11 adult leaders. The Bent County seat, Las Animas, hosts the oldest student council-sponsored event in the United States, Santa Fe Trail Days. This event is sponsored by the Las Animas High School Student Council each spring, with assistance from the Bent County Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations. Bent County has a rich history that includes various historical sites. This position is located in Bent County, Las Animas, CO.

Agriculture is the economic base, primarily consisting of dryland and irrigation farming and livestock enterprises. Other employers in the counties include government, education, private correctional facility and local medical facilities. PURPOSE OF POSITION:  The individual is a local representative of Colorado State University, and works as a member of a team of 9 professionals in the 7 county area, to provide leadership, guidance, direction and educational program support to 4-H Youth Development, nutrition, food safety, financial management, health and wellness (family and consumer science), programs for both adult and youth audiences in Bent County, while programmatic efforts are coordinated with other agents the Southeast Area, and works under the supervision of the Southeast Area Director.  

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES: The successful candidate will:

Program Planning, Development, Delivery, Evaluation and Reporting: 50%

    • Assume responsibility for overall planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of Bent County's 4-H program involving youth and leaders to ensure an active and growing program.
    • Assume responsibility for overall planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of family and consumer science research based educational programming and information to the public using a variety of educational venues. These venues include but not limited to: workshops, newsletters, blogs, website, news releases, radio programs, and volunteers.
    • Develop, implement, evaluate and report impacts of county-wide non-credit educational 4-H youth development programming and family and consumer science programming in Bent County.
    • Travel to and participate in professional development, evening and weekend events and periodic activities requiring overnight stays.
    • Work closely with other Extension staff in the area to assess needs, develop plans and identify resources for developing, organizing, implementing and evaluating the total 4-H program and family and consumer science program.
    • Maintain effective communication with Colorado State University personnel, community leaders, and local, state, and federal agencies and organizations to enhance strong program development, delivery and evaluation.

Initiate and Develop Relationships and Partnerships: 25%

  • Work collaboratively with the area agents in agriculture, livestock, horticulture, agronomy, family and consumer sciences and youth development to coordinate and deliver balanced and effective educational programming to sustain the people, agriculture, and the environment.
  • Build K-12 partnerships between CSU Extension and public schools throughout Bent Counties
    • Work closely with citizens, advisory and other groups, and local, state, and federal agencies in determining program needs and direction.
    • Work closely with the Bent County Fair Board and Superintendents preparing for the county fair, Bent County 4-H Council and Harvest Show committee.
    • Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies including reaching out to underserved and underrepresented audiences.
    • Provide leadership and program assistance with other activities as assigned.

Volunteer Recruitment, Development and Management: 15%

    • Recruit and provide leadership opportunities and training for 4-H volunteer leaders that will enable their effectiveness in working with youth and retain their commitment over sustained periods of time.

Administration and Supervision: 10%

    • Use entrepreneurial skills to find and/or generate external funding sources (grants, contracts, gifts, user fees, etc.) to help support county and programming efforts.
    • Provide supervision of the office administrative assistant, and help assure communication within the office and with county commissioners and other appropriate stakeholders.

SALARY: Salary range will be from $40,500 and not to exceed $60,000. Starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Completed bachelor's degree. Degree must be conferred in human nutrition, food safety, health and/or family resource and financial management or closely related field prior to beginning the position. A successful candidate with bachelor's degree will be required to complete a master's degree relevant to their Extension position within 5 years from the start of employment.  Failure to do so may result in termination. 
  • Course work or prior experience or evidence of capacity to conduct effective educational programs for both youth and adult audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and success in working with diverse audiences; this may include but is not limited to persistent effort, intentional programming, community engagement, allocation of resources and/or accountability for diversity outcomes.
  • Evidence of drive, initiative and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated use of facilitation skills in public settings, experience working in community engagement and/or community capacity building.
  • Demonstrated experience working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations that produce results.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Completed master's degree.
  • Experience in audience needs identification and evaluating results of programs and projects, including development of appropriate evaluation instruments.
  • Experience in the management of educational programs.
  • Experience in effectively translating and communicating technical information to lay people.
  • Professional experience with/knowledge of Extension and the Land-Grant University System.
  • Successful experience in developing financial support for educational programs including grant writing, fund raising, contracting, and/or cost recovery efforts.
  • Ability to speak Spanish.
