Position Summary: The University of Central Arkansas Department Chair is responsible leadership in the academic department, teaching, research and service. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. The position is tenured or tenure track (depending on eligibility) and a twelve­month appointment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities       We are looking for a proven leader who possesses a deep understanding of the multi­disciplinary nature of the programs; is committed to excellence in education, research, and service; and possesses the ability to work effectively with stakeholders including faculty, staff, students, alumni, industry representatives, public and private funding agencies, and other units within the college and university. The chair’s duties include:

  1. Demonstrating and providing academic leadership, acting as advocate and liaison for the department, supporting student achievement, administering and managing the academic unit, leading departmental personnel matters, fostering collegiality, celebrating successes, and contributing to the development and articulation of a vision for a diverse multi­disciplinary department.
  2. Providing leadership for all departmental programs and ensuring that curriculum, instruction, assessment and research are innovative, of the highest quality, and aligned with college and university strategic plans.
  3. Overseeing departmental administration including staffing courses, administering the budget, overseeing staff, building the class schedule building, and managing the day­to­day operations of the department.
  4. Providing leadership and effective representation for the department at the college and university levels, including establishment and implementation of college and university policies, procedures and guidelines.
  5. Fostering effective, mutually beneficial relationships with local, state and national agencies, as well as other constituencies relevant to programs represented in the Department such as external professionals and industry connections, alumni, and donors.
  6. Managing faculty appointments and development including, but not limited to, recruitment, re­appointments, promotion and tenure, annual faculty evaluation, and demonstrate knowledge about current technology.
  7. Maintaining oversight of all financial matters of the department and demonstrate experience with external accreditation processes (e.g. ACEND, NASAD, CIDA), maintain productive scholarship, and teach.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in Family and Consumer Sciences (Education), Family and Consumer Sciences (General), Interior Design, and Nutrition as well as a graduate degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. In addition, there is an Internship program in Nutrition and Dietetics. The chair represents and advocates for all departmental faculty, staff, students and programs; manages departmental personnel, budget and resources; oversees program reviews; evaluates faculty and staff; manages the course schedule building process, and provides leadership in the university, state, and region to promote excellence in Family and Consumer Sciences at undergraduate and graduate levels. The chair reports to the Dean of the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences and has overall administrative responsibilities for overseeing the undergraduate and graduate programs in the department.

Required Education and/or Experience

  1. Earned terminal degree in one or more of the department’s programmatic areas or a related area.
  2. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Education and/or Experience

Preference will be given to applicants who meet the requirements listed above and one or more of the following:

  1. Earned rank of Associate or Full Professor.
  2. Demonstrated experience in university administration such as department chair, program coordinator or comparable leadership position or professional practice/industry experience.
  3. Experience evaluating and mentoring faculty and managing other personnel.
  4. Experience with accreditation processes.
  5. Success securing and mentoring external funding.

Founded in 1907, UCA has an enrollment of approximately 11,700 students. The university offers 87 undergraduate and 58 graduate certificate and degree programs, including doctoral programs in five disciplines.
