Within this setting, the multi-disciplinary School of Human Ecology is a dynamic and growth- oriented applied research unit of over 20 faculty and staff serving over 800 undergraduate majors enrolled in programs in areas that include child and family development, fashion merchandising and apparel design, interior design, and recreation. In addition, the department houses the Child Development Center, an on-campus laboratory school serving 64 infant, toddler, and preschool age children. Programs within the school are accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Related Professions; the National Association for the Education of the Young Children; and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. Students in recreation are eligible for certification as a Park and Recreation Professional through the National Recreation and Park Association. Those who complete the recreational therapy emphasis are eligible for certification in recreational therapy from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. Students in child and family development who complete the family services and child life tracks are eligible for certification in family life education from the National Council on Family Relations and the Child Life Council, respectively. The School of Human Ecology's future directions include delivering the MS in Recreation Administration and implementing a MS in Child and Family Development.
Position Description. Reporting to the school chair, the Assistant Professor of Interior Design requires teaching, service, and research responsibilities as well as a terminal degree. The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The average teaching load is six courses per year with summer teaching opportunities possible. In the CIDA accredited program at Georgia Southern, the successful candidate will teach lecture and studio courses such as computer aided drafting and design, commercial design (specifically healthcare or hospitality design), codes, project management, advanced digital communication, and others as appropriate. The successful candidate will also seek external funding to support creative and scholarly pursuits, mentor students, and provide service to the profession, university, and community.
- Earned doctorate or MFA in Interior Design, interior architecture, or a closely related discipline by August 1, 2017
- Professional work experience in interior design, architecture, or a design field that correlates with the creative and illustrative processes of interior design
- Promise of productive research/scholarship/creative activities (e.g., juried), consistent with the teacher-scholar model, including grant/proposal writing
- Commitment to teaching, scholarship, and service that is consistent with the College's priorities for the School and the mission of the University
- Ability to contribute to a positive work environment in the School, College, and University
- Technological literacy in industry standard design software such as AutoCAD® and Revit Architecture®, SketchUP and Adobe Suite programs
- NCIDQ certification or eligibility
- Commitment to work in a diverse academic and professional community
- Evidence of strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to serve to the profession, university, and community
- Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution
- PhD in Interior Design or closely related area by August 1, 2017
- A minimum of one year of college/university teaching experience
- A minimum of one year of full- or part-time experience in design practice
- Experience with CIDA accreditation, site visits, and documentation
- Experience advising students and supervising interns
- Technological literacy and a commitment to integrate technology into teaching and scholarship
- Experience with or interest in the development and delivery of academic courses in both online and traditional formats
- Expertise in industry standard software and technologies used in the teaching of interior design
- Documentation of demonstrated interest or ability to conduct research resulting in scholarly publications
- Evidence of attention to cultural diversity in teaching, research and/or professional practice
- Ability to further support the University's commitment to equity in higher learning education
- Commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration
- Commitment to innovation in teaching
